Treasures of Eta Carinae

The Eta Carinae nebula is filled with many kinds of interesting details that are often overlooked when looking at the grand nebula. I have included tighter crops of the more interesting features as revisions, please take a look!

The nebula is way too big for my newtonian so I had to image this as a 2x2 mosaic. I used PixInsight's MosaicByCoordinates and PhotometricMosaic for assembling the mosaic and it worked wonderfully. Although I learned a lesson, in a 2x2 mosaic the center will contain data only from the extreme corners of each panel thus having worse image quality. Luckily I only have one "bad" corner so I was able to mostly hide it using the overlap from other panels. Next time I'll shoot an additional RGB panel to get acceptable stars for the center.

In any case, making mosaics with the 62MP ASI6200MM is madness unless you have the cpu and ram to burn. This one has about 200 megapixels at full resolution and the 32GB of memory in my image processing rig definitely wasn't too much. But I wish the PixInsight scripts could use multithreading more effectively since it's a bit boring to watch 15 cores idle.. luckily I work from home so I could just let it run in the background.

2h SHO each per panel = 24h total for the nebula
20min RGB each per panel = 4h total for the starfield and additional nebula colour

Title: The Keyhole Nebula

Description: The Keyhole Nebula fills most of this frame. Next to it, you can see the universe flipping the bird at us :D. Interestingly, the oblong shape of the bright star Eta Carinae apparently is not from my optics but from the completely saturated Homonculus nebula around the star!
